In the Air

I've been a bass player almost as long as I've been writing songs. That said, I've written few bass songs. Of these, In the Air is probably my favorite. Truthfully, "written" may not be the right word. In many ways, In the Air was given to me. The song literally came to me in a dream: lyrics; music; everything. I remember getting out of bed in the middle of the night to jot it down. Recording the song was out of the question. (Generally, firing-up an electric bass at 2 in the morning does not go over well with one's family and neighbors.) Therefore, I scribbled out the music, along with the lyrics, praying I'd remember the song in the morning.

In the Air

In our stillness we can feel it
Like static in the air
So symbolic in its nature
You can see it everywhere
Incubated by the waters
And nourished by our prayers
Some of us are believers
And the rest of us don't care
It's just a feeling in the air

The more specific that we get
The more elusive it will be
When we try to analyze it
We get lost in subtlety
Is it outside? Is it inside?
Is it God or is it me?
Is there really something to this?
Is it mass insanity?
It's just a feeling in the air

How absurd its symptoms sound
Yet, it seems so natural
Just an image, some emotions
Basically irrational
Has it gotten out of hand?
Is there any hand at all?
Should we try to block it out?
Should we answer to its call?
It's just a feeling in the air.
